Thursday, 17th July, 2008 The Sea
Elizabeth was walking along the beach and thinking what a peculiar day it seemed.
There was a strange shape of a face in the water. She stopped, and without any reason, said "Hello".
To her surprise, the face replied "Hello". "Wow! Who are you?" cried Elizabeth. "I am the Sea but sometimes I am called some other very horrible names yet 'Old Man Sea' doesn't seem to bother me too much". "Oh dear, what are those other mean names?". "You seem very young and I would not like to frighten you".
"Why are you talking to me, said Elizabeth". " I only talk to people who ask me the right questions", replied the Sea, "You see". "But I didn't ask you a question", said confused Elizabeth. "And that wasn't the wrong question", said the Sea. Elizabeth then thought the Sea was very silly but intriguing. Elizabeth now wanted to tell the Sea that he was crazy but she didn't want to hurt him and frighten him away. She was getting terribly confused, "I said hello to you first and that is not a question, is it?". "I'm not sure, said the Sea, but it is good so it must be at least half of a good question". "Oh you are so very odd, Mr Sea". "Well, sometimes I think I am very even but I can't always see very well from here, even if I stick my head out". "You mean when you are flat?", said Elizabeth. "Well yes, but I am not sure if I am really ever flat but I think I am often very flat". "Oh dear", Elizabeth repeated and she suddenly thought that she was understanding his way of thinking but then realised that she didn't and wonderered whether the Sea did either. Elizabeth also thought that she might be going crazy too. "So when you are flat do you feel down?". "Well, I certainly have a sinking feeling". Oh my goodness, you are so very funny, Mr Sea". "Do you ever have a rising feeling?". "I don't think so but I do know which is down and what is up", said the Sea.
"And what is your favourite thing?", said Elizabeth. "My favourite thing is the surface but I haven't really been there, only just very close". "Yes I think I know what you mean", said Elizabeth, "My favourite thing is sinking but I don't think I ever hit the bottom". "Oh dear", said the Sea. "And what is your least favourite thing", said Elizabeth. "Mmmmm I suppose either crashing into the rocks or bad questions". "Oh dear", said Elizabeth.
