Sports Coaching and New Methodologies
Athletics, swimming and all sporting contests evolve– new methods and techniques replace past orthodoxies and so performance improves dramatically. Over the last few years sports coaching methods have focussed on:
• More efficiency.
• More precision. • The elimination of unnecessary movement.
• Greater strength and fitness.
• The avoidance of costly injuries.
Technology has accelerated this evolution, not only through new equipment, better clothing and improved playing surface design but also in the use of video and performance software to analyse and study movement. In most sports coaches and players who want to be at the top of their profession tend to be hungry for knowledge and have embraced these new methods. Those that have done so succeed - none more spectacularly than the English Rugby which has transformed itself under the new regime at Twickenham. On the other hand some coaches and some entire sports fail to move with the times, partly through ignorance and partly because established coaches, clubs, and sporting associations that have thrived under these comfortable orthodoxies are reluctant to change. They resist change and fall behind, producing mediocre and injury prone players.
